Council Speaker Christine Quinn Continues To Push Nanny State Issues
Yesterday, New York City Council Speaker, Christine Quinn, wrote a letter to NYU President, John Sexton, calling for him to oust Chick-fil-A from their only location in New York, at NYU, over its leader’s anti-gay stance.
“Let me be clear, I do not want establishments in my city that hold such discriminatory views,” Quinn, an open lesbian who recently married her longtime partner, also wrote in the letter. “We are a city that believes our diversity is our greatest strength and we will fight anything and anyone that runs counter to that.”
I, personally, find Ms. Quinn’s statements ironic in that she supports diversity but only if it is in line with her own personal views. While I myself support LGBT rights and Marriage Equality, I also understand that others may not agree with my stance and respect their right to a differing opinion.
I may not like that opinion but it’s a matter of Freedom of Speech. I don’t like a lot of things that are said – racist comments, anti-gay comments, etc. But I strongly believe in our constitution and the rights given to us. And one of our core rights is Freedom of Speech and that means that you have the freedom to say what you want, I might not like it, but I also don’t have to listen.
This is just another step towards pushing New York into a Nanny State. This might be the biggest outrage yet that a city official is going against our constitution and requesting the closure of a business based on her personal views. Chick-fil-A is a legal business, creating jobs in our city, and I’m quite sure the views of their “leader” are not the views of every employee of their organization.
We must start acting on issues like this. First it’s a ban on certain size sodas to reduce obesity, next transfat is outlawed for the same reason, and now this. The government needs to get out of the business of telling us what we can put in our body or making their own personal views law.
Government can’t give permits and licenses based the political or religious views of the business owner.
The FREE MARKET will either punish Chick-fil-A…or not. Customers they lose because people who disagree with the views wont eat there and could be replaced by new customers who support their views.
New York City has an unemployment rate at 10%, higher then the national average, we should be focused on putting New Yorker’s back to work before anything else. I, for one, am scared if Christine Quinn is elected Mayor…how many other personal views of hers will be forced upon me just to live in this great city? I do not myself eat fried chicken sandwiches because you cannot do so and maintain a 24 inch waist.
